Felicity Jones and Ralph Fiennes were almost like shadows at The Invisible Woman, since they both opted for depths of inky black. From the neck up Jones was modern, in a slicked-back low bun in the manner of Rooney Mara, but her strapless gown had a distinctly centuries-old detail: a bustle.
Olivia Wilde lit up the Third Person premiere in acid yellow halter dress with full skirt, a take on fall’s “the New New Look” silhouette of the Fifties, while taking a turn for Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, Scarlett Johannsson opted for the Eighties: a sweetheart neckline with an asymmetrical hem and gathered waistline in a wispy burgundy polka-dot print and fine pink lamé metallics (it’s the same era channeled by her on-screen wardrobe).
Barry Avrich lured model philanthropist Petra Nemcova, swathed in shocking pink silk, to his Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story. At The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Him & Her Jessica Chastain also worked the delicate gossamer: she wore ethereal draped turquoise chiffon, whereas James McAvoy was casual in a khaki jacket over t-shirt and jeans.
Similarly, the cast of August: Osage County clearly did not call one another before stepping out at the premiere red carpet, that’s for sure. It was a rag tag assortment of styles and formality, even seasons — from the pictures, you’d never know they were at the same event.
In Meryl Streep’s absence, the star of the hour was Julia Roberts, in red bell-sleeves with lace découpage with an oddly stiff lampshade mini skirt. It was like a caftan-cum-baby doll and strappy fleshtone patent heels that were as towering as they were clunky (the jury’s still out on whether the combination worked or not). It doesn’t matter, though, because she’s Julia.
Another odd Osage combination: Jennifer Morrison in a throwback Fifties flared jacket and blush tulle skirt with leopard-print stilettos, whereas Julianne Nicholson did trip and minimalist body-con with a slash of lamé, Abigail Breslin — with platinum locks lifted from Jean Harlow — gave good Cyndi Lauper uptown-downtown in a voluminous floral bustier ballgown and jean jacket. Juliette Lewis wore elegant, restrained butter yellow and floor-length no less (and followed the TIFF dictat of loose waves falling from an updo we’ve now seen several days running).
